Background
Launched in April 2008, this Flesherton & District Chamber of Commerce initiative encourages walking through public promotions; trail expansion, maintenance and improvements; and structural enhancements, for example, possibly installing benches throughout the village.
A part of the project will also work to ensure that Flesherton is connected to the larger trail systems in our region. For example, the Chamber’s Initiative will work with the Bruce Trail, Canada’s oldest and longest footpath.
A new section of the Beaver Valley Bruce Trail, opened in Fall, 2008, brings the Bruce Trail right to Flesherton’s doorstep – at the East Back line near Hoggs Falls. This new portion of the Bruce Trail is an additional 30 kms and is called the Falling Water Trail, for the numerous waterfalls along the way.
The Walking Initiative is also working with the Flesherton Hills, with the Grey Sauble Conservation Authority, and with the Bruce Grey Trail Network to promote awareness and encourage trail use in our area. We are working with our partners to ensure Flesherton hiking areas, such as the Flesherton Hills are included on our partners’ websites and print brochures.
The Flesherton Hills is a 100 acre tract of walking trails behind Grey Highlands Secondary School (GHSS) and Macphail Memorial Elementary School and accessible to the public. John Burton, head of the Environmental Studies Program (ESP) program at GHSS, and a steward of the Hills, says features include a picnic pavilion, ponds, a beaver dam, forests, fields, an old orchard and new trees planted and maintained by the ESP students at GHSS. A map of the trails and some geological information is posted at the entrance to the Hills.
