Walking Village Initiative – news update – August, 2010
Hello Walkers!
Come for a Wildflower Walk and (Re)Discover the Flesherton Forest!
Sunday September 12 at 2pm we will enjoy an easy hike in the Flesherton Forest on a newly blazed loop trail.
The trail is easy, wide and mostly level with no steep ups or downs. We anticipate a two hour walk and will be guided by Chris Hachey, Land Management Coordinator at Grey Sauble Conservation and green thumb David Turner, President of the Flesherton & District Chamber of Commerce. Trees, ferns and wildflowers will be our focus.
Binoculars, cameras, sensible walking /hiking shoes, leashed dogs, water – are all good companions for this outing.
The Flesherton Forest trail is in a ”management area” of Grey Sauble Conservation. The Forest is also used to collect important climate data and is a site for snow depth measuring conducted by the Conservation Authority and shared with its climate information partners.
In other news, the Walking Village initiative is also planning to install signs at the entrances to Flesherton to promote both the Walking Village initiative, and the Flesherton website.
The Walking Initiative is not an event nor a festival, nor a walking club. Our goal is to support and enhance Flesherton as a great walking neighbourhood, through promotions,, through networking, and through enhancements, such as benches, signs and maps. This work improves local access and encourages visitors who will likely also eat and shop while they are in the area. Walking is the #1 recreation activity in North America.
One promotion is the Walking Village brochure. Please be in touch if you would like some for your location (there is a PDF version on the website also). The brochure promotes Flesherton as a great walking location, highlighting;
- pretty village strolls
- the Flesherton Hills
- the Flesherton Forest
- the Rail Trail
- steps from the Bruce Trail
- close to Feversham Gorge and Kolapore Trails
Regular updates of Walking Village news, activities and photos are kept up to date on this site. Please be in touch if you’d like more information or would like to lead a walk, start a walking group or just share a hiking story on the website.
Happy Trails to you (until we meet again),
Barbara MacKay, Communications Volunteer,
Flesherton & District Chamber of Commerce
